Douglas William “Dougie” Fisher, age 57 of Brookfield, CT, died Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by his family after a long struggle with congestive heart failure. Doug was the husband of Mary E. (Lynch) Fisher and recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Oct 2nd.
Doug was born in Flushing, NY on July 19, 1961, son of Walter W. Fisher, Jr. and the late Judith (Parker) Fisher. Doug was raised in Queens Village, NY and Highland Mills, NY before moving to Brookfield where he has lived since 1975. He was a graduate of Brookfield High School, Class of 1979.
In 1977 Doug joined the first junior member class of the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department; Candlewood Company and was a member of the department for 40 years. He completed Fire Fighter I Class in 1985, and was an active EMT for 15 years. He held many executive positions, including President in 1991-1992. He also served as a line officer for many years reaching the rank of Assistant Chief. Over the years he received many awards for his active service to Candlewood Company including; engineer of the year (4 times), The James Black Memorial Firefighter of the Year Award and the Roger A. Potter Memorial Award. On September 4, 2018 he was voted in as a life member.
Doug was also active in the Congregational Church of Brookfield as a Deacon and Stephen Minister. Doug was involved with the Brookfield Jaycees for many years, serving as their President in 1992-1993. He was also the Chairman of the Brookfield Housing Authority for 22 years. He was most recently a director on the Candlewood Shores Community Board.
Doug worked for many years as the manager of Budget Rent-A-Car in Danbury and as an EMT with Danbury Ambulance before becoming a member of the opening crew of managers at SONY Theatres in Danbury. He then had a career as a sales representative selling fire apparatus, fire equipment and ambulances, working with New England Fire Apparatus, McDermott & Co., 4 Guys, C&S Specialty, Nassau Fire, Bulldog Emergency Equipment and Cromwell Emergency Vehicles.
He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, N.Y. Yankees and the UCONN Huskies Women’s basketball team, attending many NCAA Women’s Final Fours to see them win championships.
In addition to his wife and father, Doug is survived by his brother Stephen Fisher and wife Catherine of Cheshire, CT., sisters; Diane Fisher of Lake Hiawatha, NJ. and Jennifer Barner of Tucson, AZ. Nieces; Mary Jo Fisher, Jenna Cecere and Caitlin Barner. Nephews; Andrew Fisher, Tyler Cecere, Jacob Barner and Camden Barner. Sisters-in-law; Kathleen Lynch of Trumbull, CT, and Nancy Keane and husband Kevin of Danbury, CT and brother-in-law; John Lynch of Danbury, CT. He is survived by two godchildren; Alexander G. Hidy of Huntertown, IN and Caitlin Furtado of Southbury, CT. He also leaves behind many cousins, friends and his faithful black lab, Ms. Dallas.
The family will receive friends at a memorial gathering to take place on Friday, November 30th
from 5 - 8 pm at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
A Service of Remembrance will be celebrated at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 1st in the Congregational Church of Brookfield, 160 Whisconier Rd., Brookfield.
