Bert was the loving husband of the late Marilyn Eleanor (Schultz) Bertilson, who predeceased him in 2015.
Bert was born in Bridgeport, CT on 10 July 1935. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Henry L. and Ada (Platt) Bertilson.
Bert graduated from Jesse Lee Academy in Ridgefield, CT and from Henry Abbot Technical School in Danbury, CT.
Bert and his grandfather, Henry, owned and operated Bertilson Hardware and Laundromat on Lake Avenue in Danbury for many years. Prior to his retirement, Bert owned Bert Bertilson Plumbing & Heating, “The best place in town to take a leak.”
Bert was a very active man. He spent 20 years in the Army (ret), member of the Connecticut Rebels Fife and Drum Corps, avid bowler with the Danbury Bowling Association, respected leader for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, baseball coach for the BBA, equipment manager for Brookfield Pop Warner Football, youth group leader for the Brookfield Congregational Church, life member of the American Legion, Color Guard Captain, 45 caliber pistol expert, M-1 rifle expert and expert American flag historian.
Besides his bride, Marilyn, he was predeceased by his son, Brian Earl Bertilson.
Bert is survived by his son, Dean E. Bertilson. His granddaughters, whom he was most proud of, Ashley Lynn Bertilson, and Jamie Lynn (Raymond) Duda. His newly arrived great-grandson, Jaxson. Also surviving is his brother, Burl (Audrey) Penton; and his sister, Vivian Castellano.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 12pm on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Central Cemetery, Federal Road, Brookfield, CT. All those attending are asked to wear appropriate facial covering and maintain social distancing.
