Eleanor (Ellie) Coffey, 87, of Newtown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2025, with her family by her side. Ellie was born in Danbury, attended St. Peter School and Danbury High School. She received both her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Western CT Teacher’s College and began her 35-year career in education teaching in the Bethel school system. Ellie also taught at St Gregory’s in Danbury as well as various schools in NY State.
Eleanor was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Jim Coffey and survived by her two sons, Christopher Coffey of Norwalk and Jim Coffey of Westborough, MA; grandchildren James and Emily, and their mother Lisa Coffey, of Westborough. She was lovingly supported by her nieces, Cathleen, Anne and Megan of Southbury, and Sarah and Erin of Virginia Beach. In addition to her parents, Ellie was predeceased by her brother M. John Corey and sister-in-law Mary (McKenney) Corey.
Ellie enjoyed watching the Red Sox with her husband and was a die-hard fan of UConn basketball teams. She took pride in her beautiful rose gardens and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds that frequented her backyard feeders. More than anything, time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, was most precious to her. Upon retirement, Ellie kept busy with running a reading program that supported Danbury Public Schools, was a mentor for Sacred Heart University College of Education, Board Member of the IOTA CT Chapter supporting the next generation of teachers, and an active member at St Mary’s.
