Elizabeth Varga Guinness, mother and grandmother, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Guinness of New Milford, CT and Sara Guinness of Petaluma, CA, and her two grandsons Austin and Matthew Bowling.
Elizabeth (Erzsébet) was born on March 24, 1939 in Boldogkőváralja (Happy Castle), Hungary. Her parents were Imre Varga and Anna Vavrek, and her elder sister was Mary Grace (Mária Gizella). As orphans, Elizabeth at 7 years of age and Grace at 15 travelled to the United States via Ellis Island in 1946 to reside with relatives in Norwalk, CT.
Elizabeth married George Victor Guinness, Jr. and had her two daughters, Mary Elizabeth and Sara Victoria. She was a devoted mother, provider, and caregiver. Much of her life she worked as an Executive Secretary or in the healthcare field, and occasionally took on second jobs in order to provide for her family. Her goal was to afford all opportunities to her daughters that she was not lucky enough to have experienced for herself, and she succeeded in full. She was also a devoted caregiver to her husband and sister, who passed in 1980 and 1984, respectfully.
Elizabeth was a devoted Roman Catholic and practiced her religion in word and deed. She took religion courses at the Diocese of Bridgeport and read the Bible from cover to cover. She taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) at St. Ladislaus Church in Norwalk, CT and St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan, CT, and was a sponsor in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) at St. Thomas Moore Church in Darien, CT. She also served as a Lector at her beloved St. Ladislaus Hungarian Church at the Hungarian Mass and was an extraordinary minister of the Holy Communion to those in nursing homes. Elizabeth believed strongly in the power of prayer. She devoted much of the remaining years of her life to prayer, focusing on those for whom there is no one to pray. The Blessed Mother Mary was Elizabeth's guiding light and love to whom she dedicated herself.
Visitation for Elizabeth will be held Sunday, March 20, 2022, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Green Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 21, 2022, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church, 8 Robinson Ave., Danbury, CT. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Ave., Norwalk, CT.
Elizabeth’s legacy lives on through the many teachings she has bestowed upon her much-loved children and grandchildren. Elizabeth's family would like to invite everyone in attendance to join them at Silver Star Diner in Norwalk, CT.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Alzheimer's Association (Link Below). Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.thegreenfuneralhome.com for the Guinness family
