F. Richard “Dick” Steinberg, aged 92, of Danbury, CT, and long-time resident of Westchester County, NY, passed away on Monday, May 20th, 2024. He was born on December 4,1931, in Staten Island, NY, where he grew up with his parents, Milton and Sylvia Steinberg; his siblings, Lila (Adams) and Eddie; many cousins, aunts, and uncles; and a loving pair of grandparents.
Dick graduated from Port Richmond High School and earned his B.A. from Wagner College and his M.S.W. from the Adelphi University School of Social Work. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He worked as a social worker at Wel-Met Camps, the Children’s Aid Society’s Wagon Road Camp for disabled children, the Educational Alliance, Victim’s Assistance Services, and as an adjunct faculty member at Western Connecticut State University. He was fluent in American Sign Language. Dick’s most gratifying achievements during his career involved working with children.
Dick was a member of the Rotary Club of Chappaqua, NY; served on the New York State Crime Victims Board for several years; was on the Board of Parents of Murdered Children, New York State; and led workshops for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). In his younger days he coached girls’ soccer for AYSO of Chappaqua (NY) and boys’ basketball for White Plains (NY) Recreational Department. He also served on the Board of his condominium complex for a number of years. Dick was a member of Temple B’Nai Israel in Danbury, CT.
During his daughters’ and granddaughters’ dance performances, Dick’s applause could be heard above all others’. He loved to dance and do crossword puzzles. The younger generation fondly remembers his magic tricks. His granddaughters were his most significant source of joy.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, several siblings-in-law, and daughter Lisa. He is survived by his beloved wife Marjorie Plante Steinberg, daughter Ellen Bieber, son-in-law Dennis, granddaughters Lindsey and Jillian, sisters-in-law Sharon O’Neill and Judy Steinberg, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to thank Ridgefield (CT) Visiting Nurse Association, hospice, and Benchmark Crossings in Ridgefield for the care and compassion they showed Dick in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend the burial at 1:00 pm on Friday, May 24th at Bellevue Cemetery in Adams, MA.
Visiting hours are 4:00-5:30pm with a brief service from 5:30-6:00pm on Sunday, May 26th at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St, Danbury, CT.
