Some beautiful Memories of Mama

I remember all the talents shows you came to and when I was eighteen you said I had no voice.  All my life it was a joke every time I sang you would say “You have no voice”.  My uniform for grammar school was always cleaned and pressed.  I always loved going to the movies and Broadway plays in New York City.  We would end our outing with going to “Tabs Steaks” on 42nd Street.  Thank you so much for making so many of my dresses for every occasion when I was a teenager.  I use to love all the love notes you put in my breakfast and lunch bags for work.  I know you loved going on vacation with us like Lancaster, Disney World, Bush Gardens, Lake George, Niagara Falls, Utica,  and especially all the weeks we went down to Florida to visit Aunt Lucy.  You even went on a few mini cruises to Freeport.  I know you loved the dogs and treated them as humans making toast every morning and chicken soup at times.  Mama you allowed me to go food shopping for the family at a very young age and all my life I enjoyed it so much especially saving with coupons.  You were the best cook ever and could plan a meal and the family would eat in shifts.  Every holiday was a “Big Affair”. 
 
When you lived in Brooklyn you always went to the senior center almost every day rain or shine.  No snow storm stopped you taking the bus or train.  No home-cooked meal that family was coming over was cancelled because of snow.  When you moved up to Connecticut and went to the Cardiac rehab three times a week snow did not stop you.  I remember one birthday it snowed Sunday morning but the church service was changed to night time so you didn't miss out with the rose that was presented to you.  The weather outside never stopped you from wanting to go out, you were ready way before us.

Mama you taught me how to love God and show kindness to others.  I am happy that you loved Bright Clouds/Faith Church so much.  We were very active in the church and when there was something doing we were the first there.  Many of our church brothers and sisters admired you and looked up to you for advice.  One of the last words you said to me before going to Heaven was “Are we going to church” and I would say “Not today, today is a Free Day”.  I loved the way you made the kitchen “Sparkle” and fold the clothes so neatly.  Even towards the end of your life we had many caregivers helping us out but you always taught them something in return.  I loved taking care of you so much and will always remember what you would say to us “You are going to be rewarded”.  My reward is having you as a mother and you living such a long fulfilling life.

A few days before you left us a volunteer in the hospital played the harp for you.  It was an answer to prayer for me and she played “O Come All Ye Faithful”.  Mama, you were able to hear the beautiful sound of the harp on earth so I can enjoy it with you.  

This writing is not saying “Goodbye” but I will always remember how you would move your fingers and say “I want to do”, now what I will do is continue the best I could with what you taught me.

I remember Mama.

Happy 97th birthday, Mama.  I remember missing only one of your birthdays 34 years ago. I was having your first grandson, Tommy.  He finally came the next day on January 16, 1979. For many years we celebrated both together.
 Mama was your name for over 40 years since Crissy was 6 months old. She couldn't say “Grandma,” but said “Ma Ma” and it stuck.  Crissy, Tommy and Steven all called you Mama. That was a title that spread to everyone around you.
 I remember the simple, yet elegant meals you always served. Even your tuna salad was a tasty work of art. You were the best short-order cook. Whenever I go out to eat, I compare their meals with yours.  Once in a while something tastes great and I tell the cook it is almost as good as my mother's.  That‘s the best compliment you can get from me.  
 I remember feeling so safe whenever you were with me. Growing up, there were many vicious stray dogs in our neighborhood.  I was so afraid, but you took my hand and talked to the dogs, making them stop barking and walk away.  
 I remember thinking that we must be rich because all our special occasions started with a restaurant breakfast downtown after mass, followed by a homemade feast from soup to nuts.  We'd have many desserts like pudding pie, lady fingers and cream puffs for all our relatives to share in the partytime.  “Partytime,” “big affair” and “everything is beautiful” were some of Mama's favorite expressions.  I remember the only thing that Mama hated to do was brew the coffee. It seemed to never perk, and spilled all over the stove when it finally did.  I remember Mama gave that job to cousins when they came over.  If only we had a drip coffeemaker like today.
 I remember going to the movies once a week for matinees, Coney Island all summer, Prospect Park Zoo, and Rockefeller Center to see the tree.  I'd often call you for advice. Your experiences left you with street smarts and a wealth of knowledge like none other.  
 Liz, Doris and I had the best mother in the world. Crissy, Tommy, Steven and Gabrielle had the best Mama anyone could ever have.  You may have been a tiny woman, but you leave an immense and lasting mark on this world.  Happy Birthday, Ma.  We raise our glasses to salute you while you blow out your candles in heaven.

The bright spirit of Aunt Fanny always touched me whenever we would visit.  She was one of those rare beings who always radiated  sweetness.  She will be missed.

We will miss Fanny very much. I couldn't think of a bad thing to say about her if my life depended in it.
Always a sweet smile and pleasant conversation. We never regreted any of the many visits with her and her family going back as far as the fifties.
We all grieve her passing even knowing she is still smiling.

Chris: We are so sorry for your loss. Even though your grandmother was 96, it never seems like enough time. She was a very special & sweet lady and will always be remembered dearly. Your grandmothers love will always be with you and now you and Gabrielle have a special guardian angel watching over the both of you.

Doris and family, my Mom and I are saddened by the loss of our wonderful friend Fanny. I was getting ready to send her birthday card when I heard the news. Well, Mama I could go on and on.  I thank God for giving me the most wonderful, thoughtful, spiritual, exceptional and most of all beautiful, physically and inwardly mother.

The repport I had with you was the most important gift from God.  Mama my heart is breaking and only being consoled by good friends and family that loved you.  I know you are watching over us from heaven with Dad.  Thank you Mama.

Doris, I am sorry to hear of the loss of your mother.  She was a sweet person who always had a smile on her face.

I am writing this tribute for my Godmother Fanny, who I had always considered to be a "saint".  She always had kind words to say and never made anyone feel bad about themselves.  She was very religious and I used to always say that because of her strong religious belief, I could not have had a better Godmother than her.  I know when she passed away this past Thursday she was greeted by my Godfather Frank with meatballs in his hands.  She will strongly be missed and we will always remember the good times that we had with her.  But the best part is that she is at peace right now and she is not suffering anymore.  She is surrounded by her family and friends and all of the angels and saints and God.  Rest in Peace, Fanny.
