

Fernanda Mendes, 79, passed away on June 15, 2026. She was born on April 26, 1947, in Ferreirós do Dão, Portugal. In 1969, at the age of 21, she immigrated to the United States, making her home in Danbury, Connecticut. In 1971, she married Alexandre Mendes, and they welcomed two children, George and Irene.
Fernanda’s life was marked by devotion, faith, and resilience. Her passion, work ethic, and selfless commitment to those she loved were evident to all. Fernanda had a zest for life and a vivacious spirit that stayed with her throughout the years. She loved her family and was a constant matriarch who provided guidance and wisdom.
Fernanda found great joy in cooking for her family and making countless memories while gathered around the kitchen table. She also enjoyed crocheting and gifting handmade creations to friends and family. Her gracious nature and sense of humor always brought light into the routine moments of life. Fernanda was committed to Immaculate Heart of Mary Portuguese Parish in Danbury, where her faithful heart found community and purpose throughout the years.
Fernanda was predeceased by her husband, Alexandre Mendes; her parents; and her sister, Natalia. She is survived by her children, George and Irene; her grandchildren, Jonathan, Kaden, August, and Antonia; and her siblings, Maria Alice and Aureliano.
The family expresses sincere gratitude to the staff of Maplewood at Danbury and Regional Hospice for their care and support.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 11 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Deer Hill Ave., Danbury with a burial to follow at St. Peter Cemetery, Lake Ave. Ext., Danbury.
Family and friends may pay their respects from 9 - 10:30 AM on Monday, June 22nd at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
