Florence was born June 6, 1921 in Norwalk, CT to the late Charles and Florence (Peet) Smith. She was predeceased by her husbands, Herman Houghtaling and Oscar “Gus” Henkel, and her brother Walter Smith.
Florence is survived by her son James Houghtaling and his wife Bonnie of Exeter, NH, and daughter Nancy Stietzel and her husband Andrew “Bert” Stietzel of Southbury, her grandchildren: Carey, Thomas, Drew Stietzel, Scott Houghtaling, and Jeannine Logue, and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Charles Smith Jr. and his wife Mary of Norwalk, and several nieces and nephews.
Florence was happiest when she had a calender full of events and outings planned with family and friends. Hosting holiday parties was another of her great pleasures. She was an avid golfer into her early 90’s and was a wicked and wiley card shark. Flo was also known as the “Bingo Queen”. Go with the “Flo” was the family motto. She had many friends of all ages across her long and exceptional life.
Florence’s family will receive friends at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Monday, September 24th from 4:00 to 7:00pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Tuesday, September 25th in Saint Elizabeth Seton Church, 520 Ridgebury Rd., Ridgefield. Burial will be in the Umpawaug Cemetery, Redding.
