George F. Schmiedel, 81, of Danbury, beloved husband of Sally (McDermott) Schmiedel, his wife of 60 years, passed away at Pope John Paul II Health Care Center, on Friday, January 27, 2012. George was born in Danbury, son of the late Howard and Mary (Rogers) Schmiedel.
He served in the US Marine Corps in Korea and had been a longtime agent for John Hancock Life Insurance Company, as well as the Democratic Registrar of Voters in Danbury for more than 30 years. He was a member of St. Peter Church, Richter Park Men’s Golf Club and had served as a City Councilman and Scout Leader. He was known for his recall of names, faces and addresses and had a great love for his family and a wonderful sense of humor.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Mark Schmiedel, of Warwick, RI and Steven Schmiedel, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, his daughter, Brenda Forrest, of Oakville, his daughter-in-law, Anne Schmiedel, of Mapleville, RI, his brother, J. Roger Schmiedel, of Danbury and his grandchildren: Gregory, Carolyn and Daniel Schmiedel, in RI and Christopher and Cameron Forrest, in Oakville, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Howard and John Schmiedel and sister, Mary Hopkins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Wooster Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
