George Dewey Strohmeyer Jr.

George Dewey Strohmeyer, Jr., 83, of Danbury, CT, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Regional Hospice, following a long and courageous battle with a blood disorder that progressed to acute myeloid leukemia. His daughters were by his side as he entered eternal life.

Dewey was born in Oceanside, NY, the son of the late George Dewey Strohmeyer, Sr. and the late May Strohmeyer, née Mary Anne Paulina Hoffman. He grew up in Rockville Centre and attended St. Paul’s School for Boys in Garden City, New York. He received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and enrolled in a Ph.D. program in mathematics at Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio. Partway through the program during a time of unrest in the early 1970’s, he felt “the world needed another pastor more than another mathematician.” At that time, Dewey accepted his master’s degree from CIT and enrolled in seminary at Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, now located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He completed his Master of Divinity in 1972 and was ordained as a Lutheran minister at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Madison, Ohio, on August 20 of that same year.

Dewey served as a full-time minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America until 1978, when he returned to his mathematical roots and pursued a career serving the community as a high school math teacher. He taught at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury from 1978 to 1983, and then in the Weston Public School system from 1983 until his retirement in 2012. A gifted and dedicated educator, he was named Teacher of the Year in 2001.

Dewey eased into retirement by teaching part-time at Christian Heritage School from 2012 to 2014. He later remained active in the community as a volunteer tutor and mentor with Danbury Grassroots Academy and Jericho Partnership, and by serving meals to people experiencing homelessness in Bridgeport.

Throughout his years as a math teacher, Dewey continued to feel called to the church and served as assistant minister at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Ridgefield. He was installed on Reformation Sunday in 1981 and served until his retirement in 2005. Dewey lived a deeply faith-filled life, guided by service, humility, and compassion, and he carried his calling as a minister into every chapter of his life.

It was during his time in seminary that Dewey met the love of his life, Louise Anne Mitskevitch, while serving as vicar at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois. They were married in that same church on June 5, 1971, and remained married for 49 years and 6 days until her passing. Together, they built a full and loving life with their daughters, traveling around the United States, boating on Long Island Sound in the summers, and camping in the Poconos and Vermont. Family was the most important thing to Dewey, and he loved his family immensely and unconditionally.

Throughout his life, Dewey found joy in anything he could relate to numbers or math, working around his yard, watching western and classic movies, motorcycling, bicycling and, above all, spending time with his cherished grandchildren. A devoted fan of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, he rarely missed an episode and looked forward to watching them every day.

Dewey was predeceased by his beloved wife, Louise Strohmeyer, and his first-born daughter, Amy Katherine, who died as an infant.

He is survived by his daughters: Donna Zwirner and her husband, Aaron, of Springfield, VA; and Jennifer Strohmeyer of Danbury, CT; by his grandchildren: Zachary and Allison Zwirner and Jadeyn Strohmeyer; and by his loyal dog, Denver. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and the many members of the community whose lives he touched.

We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital and Regional Hospice for the care he received over the past few years, especially these last few weeks. We would also like to thank our caring neighbors and friends who have supported our family through our time of need.

Funeral Services will take place at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at St. Andrew's Church, 6 Ivy Hill Rd., Ridgefield, CT. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, 71 Lake Ave. Ext., Danbury, CT.

Friends will be received from 4:00pm - 7:00pm on Monday, August 3, 2026, at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT.
