Gloria Jean Weinshel

Gloria Jean Weinshel of Danbury, CT passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2015 after a courageous battle with lung cancer at the age of 54 in Danbury, CT. She was the wife of David A. Weinshel, MD. Gloria was born March 14, 1960 to Maria Corona Schmidt of Danbury and the late Arthur Jack Schmidt. She attended Danbury Schools and then worked for Danbury Hospital and its affiliates for over 35 years, last as the practice manager for the endocrinology practice of Western Connecticut Medical Group.

While growing up, Gloria had many friends and maintained those friendships throughout her life. She met her husband, Dr. David Weinshel, shortly after his arrival in Danbury for medical residency in 1981; and they knew they were right for each other immediately. They married on Feb. 1, 1987 in Las Vegas.

Gloria was a generous, caring and upbeat person and always enjoyed doing what she could to brighten the lives of those around her in all aspects of her life. So many people spontaneously would comment on Gloria’s loving, kind character. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, painting and playing poker. She was a very spiritual person and frequently attended St. Peter’s church. She fought an incredibly difficult battle with lung cancer and maintained hope and her usual bright and insightful attitude on her condition throughout its course.

Besides her husband and mother, Gloria is survived by her brother: Jack Jeffrey Schmidt and his wife, LeighAnn, of Pflugerville, TX. Her niece: Lauren Schmidt of Danbury. Her aunts and uncles: Susan and Anthony Corona; Lorraine and Fred Whitlock of The Villages, Florida; Uncle Bob Schmidt of Bonita Springs, FL and her aunt Dale Marsh of Danbury; Her brothers- and sisters-in-law (Liz and Joel, Sarah and Preston) and her mother-in-law (Marcia). Many cousins, including Jean and Patrick Braker of Danbury, nieces and nephews also survive. Gloria is also survived by her beloved cats, Lucy Rose and Richard Parker. She was predeceased by her father, who passed away on October 30, 1981.
