Gretel Sakla, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, devoted wife, mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on May 26, 2024, at age 97. She leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable memories.
Born in Övermark, Finland, one of 11 children, Gretel spent her formative years in the small farming village she always called home. Eventually life led her to settle in South Salem, New York and then Ridgefield, Connecticut, where she created a life filled with happiness.
Gretel’s true joy in life, however, came from her family. She shared over 52 wonderful years of marriage with her loving husband, Walter, creating a strong and enduring partnership despite a language barrier that they overcame as they both learned English. Together they raised two children who, with their respective devoted spouses, gave them 5 cherished grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren so far.
Beyond her family, Gretel found delight in life’s simple pleasures. She was passionate about cooking and baking, creating dishes she remembered from her homeland. Professionally, she was an acclaimed hairdresser in Manhattan, NYC, often providing hairdressing services to friends and family after hours. She also enjoyed caring for the family’s many pets as well as growing a variety of vegetables in her garden.
Gretel’s warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit will continue to inspire all fortunate enough to have known her.
She will be reunited with her husband at St. Peter Cemetery in Danbury, CT.
May her soul find eternal peace and her memory live on in our hearts.
