

Gustave “Gus” Markstaller lll, 72, formerly of Bethel, Ct. passed away peacefully at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer, with his family & friends by his side, in Evansville, Indiana on January 18, 2018. Gus was the son of the late Gustave Jr and Eva Markstaller of Brookfield, CT. and was a graduate of the class of 1963 of Danbury High School.
Gus was an Engine mechanic in the United States Navy and was stationed in Japan and Subic Bay, Philippines. Following in his fathers' footsteps, Gus spent his career in the trade of Plumbing and Heating and was a member of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union 777. He was also in business for himself, for many years. He was a hard worker and meticulous in the work he did and lived by the motto “If you’re not going to do it right, don’t do it all.” He was also employed at Home Depot in Evansville, IN after retiring from plumbing.
Gus was a good father; grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He kept in touch with all his friends near and far throughout the years, even during his illness. Gus told it like it was and didn’t have much of a filter. He was always quick with one of his witty quotes or funny jokes. He was happiest when spending time with family and friends and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law of New Milford, CT, Susan and Robert Jonke; and a son, Erick Markstaller and his fiancee, Ms. Randi Shaboo, both of Danbury, CT; a stepson, Eric Berendt and wife Jamie of McKinney, Texas; five grandchildren, Jenna Jonke, Jesse Markstaller, Kurt Jonke, Collin Berendt and Nicholas Berendt; his sister, Linda L. Najam of Danbury, CT. and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Simfrosa “Rosie” Markstaller and his “adopted” family of Evansville, IN Christopher & Elizabeth Logan. Gus was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and Nelson Hill and most recently, brother-in-law George A. Najam, all of Danbury, CT.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT. on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 4pm-7pm. Entombment with full military honors will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 10am the State Veterans Cemetery at Middletown, 317 Bow Ln, Middletown, CT.
