Helen Jean Lukesh Shannon, age 90, of Moriches, New York passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023. Helen was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Helen, formerly of Bethel and Charlestown, RI, was the wife of the late Edward M. Shannon, owner of Shannon Brothers Service Station in Bethel.
Helen was born January 2, 1933, in Kingston, PA, the daughter of the late George and Helen Lukesh. She attended Bethel Public Schools, earning her BS degree in Dietetics from Misericordia University in Dallas, PA, and her Masters degree at NYU.
She enjoyed her career as a Registered Dietician working early on for the State of Connecticut and followed with her own counseling practice “Foodstyles for Health”.
Helen and Ed lived in Bethel until 1995 and upon Ed’s retirement, they moved to Charlestown, RI. While in RI Helen worked for the VNS Home Health Services in Narragansett until her retirement in early 2019. With the love of her profession and a quest for knowledge Helen attended diabetes conferences and participated in diabetes workshops for senior citizens in Block Island. Summer Sundays were spent volunteering at the Newport Music Festival.
While in Rhode Island, Helen loved being near the ocean, going out on their boat, and long walks at “The Wall” in Narragansett. Family and friends were always welcome to visit and she would happily take you on a tour of Charlestown, lunch at the Coast Guard house, walking through the shops in Watch Hill or a quick trip to Newport. There was not enough time in the day for Helen to do all the things that she wanted to accomplish.
Helen moved to Moriches, NY in Long Island in November 2020 to be near her daughter Debbie and family.
Helen is survived by her daughter Debbie Kiernan, son-in-law John, granddaughter Alyssa and grandson Jack of Patchogue, NY; sister Karen Kovacs (nee Lukesh) of New Hill, NC in addition to several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from Good Shepard Hospice and aides Lorraine and Lynn for their kindness during Helen’s illness.
Calling hours for Helen will be held Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St, Danbury, CT.
A funeral mass will occur Monday, April 24, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Church, 24 Dodgingtown Rd., Bethel, CT. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery, 71 Lake Ave Ext., Danbury, CT.
