

Helen was born May 19, 1923 in Ridgefield, the daughter of the late Joseph F. Knapp of Ridgefield and the late Florence Martha (Coburn) Knapp of London, England. As a young woman, Helen was a member of the Navy WAVES, and during WWII drove an ambulance in California and trained as a pharmacist in Bethesda, MD. She later attended Hunter College in New York and the Leon Hairdressing Institute in Greenwich CT.
Helen was a loving mother and loyal wife. She was an avid gardener, a talented cook, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
Helen is survived by her three daughters: Catherine Smith and her husband James Smith III of Danbury, Karen Jones and her husband Harold of Danbury, and Susan Hahn and her husband Jeffrey Sr. of New Milford, six grandchildren: James, Jeff, Michael, Suzette, Michelle, and Nicholas, seven siblings: Dorothy, Josephine, Mildred, Richard, Edward, Charles, and Marjorie, as well as many nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her sister Florence Hayes, and brother Joseph Knapp.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Friday April 5th in Saint Gregory the Great Church, Danbury. Burial with military honors will be in Saint Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
The family will receive friends at the Green Funeral Home 57 Main Street Danbury on Thursday April 4th from 5 thru 8 pm.
