Horst Lentz passed away early Monday morning holding the hand of his beloved wife, Maja. Horst was born in Stateen-Hoekendorf, Germany to Kurt and Hildegard Lentz in 1933. He and his family were refugees following World War II, and he grew up in Kroepelin and Dortmund, Germany.
He came to the United States in 1954 to work on a farm belonging to distant relatives in Menomonee, Wisconsin. He later joined the United States Army to improve his English, and they promptly sent him to Germany. He spoke fondly of his time in the Army and was proud to serve his adopted country. It was in Germany that he met a young woman named Maja whom he married, brought back to the United States, and lived with for the next 66 years.
Horst worked forty years for the same company during which time he literally built the house where he and Maja raised three children, and he earned an engineering degree at night. He was a devoted fan of the UConn Girls Basketball Team, and he never met a meal he didn’t like.
Horst is survived by his three sons Vernon (Beth), Rob (Anne), and Brian (Ann), five grandchildren, Seth (Blaire), Justin, Maddie, Ollie, and Cece, and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 4 at The Congregational Church of Brookfield at 160 Whisconier Rd., Brookfield, CT.
