Born in Danbury, CT, Irene was the daughter of Margarida (Rosa) Simoes of Danbury and the late Ataide Simoes. She was a 1967 graduate of Immaculate High School and received her BA and MA from Western CT State University. Irene received her 6 Year Certificate from Fairfield University.
A teacher with the Danbury Public School System for 35 years, Irene retired in 2006. She taught at Shelter Rock School, South Street School and Mill Ridge Intermediate School, where she spent most of her career. In 1991 she was awarded Teacher of the Year for the Danbury School System.
Irene was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Danbury and a member of the Portuguese Cultural Center, where she was active on the Scholarship Committee. She was a volunteer with the Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury and the Danbury Historical Museum.
Besides her husband and mother, survivors include her sister: Elaine Donnelly, her husband Michael and their children Taylor and Grant. Numerous cousins also survive.
Besides her father, Irene was predeceased by her sister, Delfina Simoes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 11am at Sacred Heart Church, Danbury, with the Rev. Peter Towsley, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
Friends will be received on Saturday from 9am-10:30am at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
