Born in San Miguel, Azores, Portugal to the late Luis and Gilda Carreiro Sousa, he immigrated to the U.S. on October 3, 1969 and settled in Danbury. Joao Luis was a 20 year employee of Viking Wire in Danbury. He then was employed by Western CT State University until his retirement in 1992.
Joao Luis spent his retirement between Portugal and Danbury. He was an avid furniture maker, enjoyed working in his garden and making wine. A beloved father, Joao was devoted to his children and grandchildren.
Besides his loving wife of 65 years, survivors include his sons: Luis Sousa and his wife, Mary Jo; Ernesto Luis and his wife, Lori; Mario Luis; John Luis; and Jimmy Luis and his wife, Jennifer. His daughters: Mena Dibble and her husband, Larry; Maria Russo and her husband, Mark; and Paula Whitlock. Survivors also include 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 3pm-5pm on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT.
Burial will be private.
