John was born on November 11, 1940 in Manhattan to John and Magdalena Sweeney. He was one of four children.
He graduated from Saint Simon Stock High School in 1959. He rose through his advertising career to the rank of Vice President. He worked for several large advertising agencies including BBD&O, Darcy McManus & Masius and Quality House of Graphics.
On April 15, 1972 he married Geraldine Curioli. They moved to Eastchester, NY in 1973, where they resided for 42 years. Together they raised a son, John, and a daughter, Stephanie.
John was a man of many talents. He was a fine artist and was a serious woodworker. Some of his projects included Adirondack style furniture pieces, and his most intricate work was an exact scale model replica of his daughters vacation log home.
He loved to travel and together with his family visited much of the United States and many of its national parks. John was a true animal lover with his favorites being his black labrador “granddogs” Montie and Molly. He was a quiet man with a dry sense of humor and a most generous spirit. He loved movies, the New York Giants, fine Italian food, and spending time with family and friends.
Over the years his taste for beer was replaced by his very favorite root beer float.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Geraldine Sweeney; his son, John Sweeney; his daughter, Stephanie Loretta-Catucci; his son in law, Clint Loretta-Catucci ;and grandchildren Clint and Grace Loretta- Catucci and Kylie, Daniel and Alex Sweeney.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at Mountain View Cemetery, 188 CT RT 37, New Fairfield, CT on Friday July 3 at 1 pm.
A full Memorial Mass will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.
