At 17 Jose traveled with his mother Casimira and sister Mary Alice from Portugal to join his father Eurico, in the United States. One of the proudest moments of his young adult life was becoming a U.S. citizen.
He went on to marry the love of his life, wife Lydia, who together over a span of 66 years of marriage enjoyed a life filled with love and laughter with their ever growing family. Being with his wife and their large extended family, with all the grandchildren and great grandchildren, which he did regularly, was his greatest pleasure.
Jose owned and operated Nunes Corporation and over the years built over 121 houses in the greater Danbury area. When Jose wasn’t with his family you could always find him working. In his later years when he was “retired” he could be found at one of his children’s or grandchildren’s houses working with them on various projects. Whether he was on a roof, a ladder, swinging a sledge hammer, laying tile or any of the many other various types of work he did, he loved working on his projects, especially the ones helping out his family.
Jose was honored by Mayor Mark Boughton on Portuguese day in 2007 with a key to the city for his lifelong contributions to the City of Danbury. Jose was an active member in the Sons of Portugal and then the Portuguese Cultural Center Club until his death.
Jose was loved and respected by all that knew him and will be dearly missed.
