Leonel Almeida Nunes da Cunha, 74, of Danbury, Connecticut, passed away on July 12th, 2020 at Danbury Hospital, after many recent health struggles.

Leonel was born in Nabais Portugal on April 1st, 1946. He was a master carpenter by trade and worked in restoring many national treasures in his home country. In his youth, Leonel briefly played professional soccer before being recruited into the service and serving in Angola. Leonel was married to Felisbela (Bela/Maria) on February 14, 1966; they were married for 54 years. He immigrated to the United States in March of 1982 with his wife and three young daughters and settled in Danbury, CT. Leonel worked as a laborer for many years until he retired in 1998 due to health issues. He enjoyed gardening and he was an avid soccer fan so he never missed any of his beloved Benfica games.

Leonel is survived by his beloved wife, Felisbela, his three daughters, Clara, Estela and Vera, his adoring grandchildren, Nicole, Michael, Isabella, Lilliana and Luke, his son-in-law John, his sister Clara and many nieces and nephews and last but not least, his aide Maria, who was like a daughter to him. Leonel is preceded in death by his parents, Antonio Bernardo Nunes da Cunha and Preciosa de Almeida, and his siblings Flora, Inocencia, Estela, Avelino, Claudio and Antonio.

Due to the Covid pandemic, services for Leonel will be held privately. To leave a message of hope and remembrance, please visit www.thegreenfuneralhome.com .

Dear Estella and family, love Michelle and I fel t a pang of grief pierced through us when we learned of your dad's passing. Your dad's legacy, beginning with his deep pride over his Portuguese heritage and all through the respected and impressive gifts and skills as a superior craftsman, will always be admired. Anyone with any eye for beauty has realized what an autistic, fine carpenter your dad has always been. His amazing wood sculptor gracing the front of the Portuguese club in Danbury is a powerful testimony to just how gifted he was, and how uniquely special his work is. Even most of the greatest carpenters could not claim to possess the aesthetic distinction that was stamped upon your dad's soul. The love he must have felt, and feels, all the times you accompanyed him to the doctor's office Will always be with him. And how you stood up for him during some of those medical visits is a reflection of just how profound your love for him was... And will always be. His love for all of you, his family, could hardly be captured in words. Only all of you, in the privacy of your own hearts, can know the intimacy of such family love. While the spear of griefs piercing sorrow will remain fresh for a long time, your dad will forever remain fresh and alive within you. The reason for this is.... Love is far greater and stronger than death......... Tony and Michelle Mattiaccio

It is with great sadness for your loving daughters and precious grandchildren that will miss your love and hugs that I share this message.

May your dad's peace touch all of you during this difficult time. He is in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May the sorrows of his passing be replaced by the beautiful memories of his love and great times shared together.

I love you all dearly and treasure our friendship. God bless you all.

I remember Mr. Cunha well. I always thought of him as one of the strongest, hardest working people I have ever met. While I didn't know him as well as I did his daughter Clara and wife, I do know he has an amazing family and was so loved. My heart goes out to his family and friends. xoxoxo Sending hugs and prayers your way!
