Manfred J. Goersch

Manfred Goersch, 84, passed away on June 7th at his home in the presence of his family who he loved and cared for dearly. He was born on January 4th, 1930 in Hartmannsdorf, Germany. At the age of seventeen, he left home and fled from occupied East Germany to West Germany where he settled in Bremerhaven and met and then married the love of his life, Ursela Jatzen, in October 1950..

Manfred began his career as a baker on a North German Lloyd passenger ship. He quickly rose thru the ranks to become the ships Pastry Chef and Head Baker. During his travels, he became fond of the United States and saw the opportunity to further his career and ultimately buy his own Bakery. He relocated his wife and two small boys to the United States and continued to work as a Baker in New York City until which time he realized his dream and purchased his own Bakery in Ridgewood, Queens in 1960. His Bakery flourished for seventeen years. During this time, his daughter Linda was born fulfilling his dream of having a little girl.

In 1977, he sold his Bakery and relocated to Sherman, CT where continued to love and support his family while working as the Head Pastry Chef at Union Carbide. Manfred retired in 2002 and became more involved with the Arion Singing Society, a German-American Cultural Club where he became a life member of the Club and supported the Club until his death.

After retirement, he spent his time between Connecticut and Florida. He later moved to Southbury, Connecticut. He is survived by his wife, Ursela, of 63 years, his son Helmut (Chuck) and wife Helen of New Milford, CT; Juergen (Jerry) and his wife Karen of Darien, CT and his daughter Linda Fragomeli and her husband, Ilario of Roxbury, CT.; his grandchildren, Krista Tabor and her husband, Erik; Brian, Melinda, Marcus, Christopher and Jennifer.

Visiting hours are at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, CT from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 14th.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Regional Hospice & Home Care, 30 Milestone Road Danbury, CT.
