Born I Danbury, CT., on October 25, 1921, to Edward and Agnes (Lynch) Burns, she was one of six children and attended Danbury schools. She graduated from Danbury High School in 1941.
She married Lee Ross Hartell in May 1947, they had three children. Tragically, on August 27, 1951, then Army First Lieutenant Hartell was killed in action in South Korea.
Mrs. Hartell served three terms as City Treasurer with then-Mayor John Define. She was a seasonal worker at the John McLean store on Main Street for many years and could be found working yearly at the Great Danbury State Fair.
Besides her husband she was predeceased by her sister Helena (Adler) and brothers Edward, John, and Leo, as well as a son, Lee John Hartell (2013.)
She is survived by her daughters Sharon (Paul) Siegel and Sandra (Kevin) Barry, and a sister Mary Godfrey, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Margaret “Grandma Peg” will be sorely missed by her five grandchildren Patrick, Tricia (Gantert) and Keith Barry and Jason, and Carrie Siegel. She will also be greatly missed by her five great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Daniel Gantert, Jake and Jack Siegel, and Keira Gallagher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Church, 104 Main Street Danbury, CT on Saturday, December 19, at 10:30 AM, burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. Because of COVID restrictions, persons wishing to attend the Mass must contact Sharon Siegel at (203) 241-0197 no later than midday Wednesday.
