It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Richard M. McGannon, Esq. (69), of Redding, CT. Richard died at his home on January 23, 2023, surrounded by family, after a heroic 4.5 year-long battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband to Helen V. (O’Grady) McGannon - the love of his life.
Richard was born September 14, 1953 in Norwalk, CT, the son of the late Doctor Robert and Rita (Wilbur) McGannon. He graduated from the Delbarton School in New Jersey, and went on to attend the University of Notre Dame, Fairfield University, and Quinnipiac College School of Law. Richard went on to build a successful law practice, the Law Office of Richard M. McGannon, Esq. in Redding, CT, where he had the pleasure of working alongside his wife, Helen, whom he married in 1993.
In addition to his wife of 30 years, Helen, Richard is survived by his children: Kailley McGannon and Matthew McGannon, both of Redding, CT, Aubrey (Thomas) Blatchley of Canton, CT, Ralph (Alyssa) Ruta III of Shelton, CT, Tamarin (Jonathan) Zoppa of Mooresville, NC; six grandchildren, Isabella, Gabriella and Joseph Zoppa of Mooresville, NC, and Mason, Bryce and Madison Blatchley of Canton, CT; 8 siblings, Jack, Shauvon, Carla, Terri, Rem, Mary, Jamie and Monica, as well as extended family and countless friends, including friends whom he loved like family. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Paul.
Richard was an encyclopedia of knowledge, everyone’s go-to, a jack of all trades, and a perpetual problem solver. But more than that, he was the kindest and most generous person we will ever have the pleasure of knowing. He was a fixer of all things through-and-through, from cars to legal problems, all of which he approached with enthusiasm, reflecting his helping heart. He loved spending time with his family, coaching and cheering on his kids, hikes at Great Ledge, playing golf, watching football and hummingbirds, pushing his babies on the swing, talking politics, and raucous games of Trivial Pursuit.
The hole he left is immense. He was a great man. He will be forever loved and always missed. Richard’s battle with cancer was long and hard-fought, but he faced his illness with grace and volunteered for any research trial available because of his undying love for his wife and children. He never complained and had a smile on his face through the most difficult of times.
The family will receive friends at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT on Friday, February 3, 2023 from 4-7pm. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Redding, CT Saturday, February 4 at 10:30am. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Richard may be made to “Yale School of Medicine,” referencing Dr. Daniel Petrylack Research Fund in memory of Richard McGannon, at Dr. Daniel Petrylack, P.O. Box 208032, New Haven, CT 06520.
