Richard, born on February 24, 1940, lived a life defined by service, education, family, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. For many years, he was a respected science teacher at Bethel High School for 30 years, where he inspired generations of students with his curiosity, enthusiasm, and ability to make science come alive. Though known as a tough teacher, his students fondly remembered the way he made learning both meaningful and fun.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed for two years at Fort Sam Houston with Honorable Discharge in 1965. Following his military service, he devoted an extraordinary 65 years to serving his community through the fire department on the formerly named Phoenix, now Battalion 19. His courage, commitment, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Outside of his professional and civic life, Richard found great joy in birds, wildlife, and the outdoors. He loved spending time observing nature and sharing his knowledge with others. His passion for science extended far beyond the classroom, and he especially enjoyed geology and astronomy, always remaining curious about the world around him and the wonders of the night sky. An Eagle Scout at age 17, and an excellent athlete throughout his life, he enjoyed baseball, basketball, skating, and hockey and played on his high school, college and Army basketball and baseball teams. He was also an avid fisherman and gardener who appreciated time spent with friends over a cold beer. His home-grown hot frying peppers and tomatoes made for a delicious homemade tomato sauce. Richard loved challenging jigsaw puzzles and always tackled the most difficult ones with a smile and a nod.
Richard will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to others. Through his teaching, service, friendship, and love for family, he touched countless lives and leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carolyn, along with cherished family members, dear friends, former students, and fellow firefighters who will miss him deeply.
