“Captain Bob” as he was affectionately known by his many friends and colleagues, was a fixture at his beloved Danbury Airport going back to the early 1960’s. He was well known as an avid aviator who pursued his passion for flying from an early age as both a hobby and a profession.
Bob served as a corporate pilot throughout his career, most notably as Manager of Flight Operations for C.R. Bard, Inc. in Murray Hill, NJ from 1982 until his retirement in 1998. In that role, he built the flight department from inception by establishing safety as the number one priority. Recognized as a consummate professional, Bob hired and trained courteous and competent people, located and acquired the best aircraft, and diligently administered their highest level of maintenance. He took immense pride in the efficiency, decorum, and cost effectiveness of the operation that he developed and then left to the company and his successors.
Following his retirement, Bob continued to indulge his enthusiasm for flying both recreationally and professionally. He owned several airplanes throughout the years. including his beloved TravelAir which he continued to operate into his nineties. In 2002 at the age of sixty-nine he completed his first solo helicopter flight after several years of dedicated training and continued to accumulate flight time in that aircraft for many years thereafter. He also proudly served as a member of the Danbury Aviation Commission until his passing.
A loving son, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Bob was blessed with a warm smile, good humor and infectious personality that left a favorable impression on all who knew him. While saddened by his passing, all his family and friends are grateful for the extended time they had to spend with him in his final months and comforted by their fond memories and the legacy which he took great care to leave behind.
