
Rolf was born December 24, 1924 in Oslo, Norway, the son of the late Mikael and Ester (Briskerud) Gran. He received his education in Norway, and immigrated to the United States in 1948, living first in Brooklyn, NY, and then moving to Manhattan. As his family grew, Rolf moved to New Rochelle, NY and finally to Putnam Valley, New York.
Rolf was employed for many years by Sons of Norway in Life Insurance sales.
Rolf was proud of his Norwegian heritage, and wanted to ensure that the culture and traditions that he loved were sustained. He was instrumental in the establishment of several Sons of Norway lodges in Westchester-Putnam County including Midnatsolen and Troll Lodge, serving as President of both. In addition, he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Yorktown Heights, NY where he sang in the choir.
Rolf enjoyed fishing, gardening, music, woodworking, and his dogs: Camille and Buster. For many years, he played piano in a 4 piece band, and was always the life of any party.
In addition to his wife of 68 years, Rolf is survived by his son: Terje Gran and his wife Sue of New Fairfield, his daughters: Tone Smyth and her husband James of Carmel, NY; Irene Fazio and her husband Paul of Danbury, and Susan Brugger and her husband Robert of Wappinger Falls, NY, one sister: Asbjorg Karlsen of Norway, five grandchildren: Erik Gran, Kristopher Barton, Michael Fazio, Melissa Fazio McGuckin, and LoriAnn Brugger, 6 great-grandchildren: Erik T, Jacob, Matthew, Isaac, and Bethany Gran, and Alex Barton. He was predeceased by his grandson Peter Gran, his sister: Ase Jonnvoll, and brothers Per Gran and Willi Madsen
The family will receive friends at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury on Monday January 12th from 5-8 pm.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday January 13th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 18 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury. Burial will follow in the Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
