He was born on April 26th 1941 in Budapest, Hungary to László and Erzebeth Gratzl. He courageously immigrated to the United States at the age of 25, in the pursuit of freedom. He found his new beginning in Connecticut.
He was a Sergeant in the Hungarian military and a tailor by trade. He was a licensed electrician in Connecticut and New York for over 40 years.
Alex enjoyed golfing, skiing and attending sports memorabilia events. He was a collector of eagle statues which represented the freedom he found here and enjoyed hosting annual Fourth of July celebrations for his friends and family. He always lent a helping hand no matter who needed it, and valued spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Alex is survived by his wife, Michele, his daughter Suzanne Benz, her husband Scott, and his son Michael Gratzl, his wife Alanna and his grandchildren Mary, Dianna and Jackson of Danbury and Jace and Owen of Southbury.
The family will receive friends at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury on Sunday, August 9th between the hours of 3 and 7pm . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 10th at 10:30 am in Saint Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Rd, Danbury. The Burial will follow at Saint Peter’s Cemetery in Danbury.
Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Regional Hospice.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Dr. Baehring, Dr. Aliou, Dr. Bonwetsch, and Courtney Kennedy, PA for their compassionate care during Alex’s prolonged illness.
