Born to Manuel Vidal Barrier and Leopoldina DeSousa, on February 25, 1934 in Senhorim, Nelas, Portugal, Victor moved to the United States on his 23rd birthday in 1957, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where his family had immigrated when he was a child. Victor settled in Danbury, where he met and married his loving wife, Maria Alexandrina Dos Santos, in 1965. There, he and his wife lovingly raised their children, Victor and Julia, and later, his precious granddaughter, Alexia.
A lifetime member of the Sons of Portugal Club and Portuguese Cultural Center, as well as of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Victor proudly worked as a machine set-up man at Amphenol Corporation in Danbury for 38 years before retiring in 1998.
Victor was a passionate gardener who spent countless hours in his self-built greenhouse, tending to his vegetable garden and the beautiful flowers planted throughout his yard. He would say that each one had a story, and relished sharing those with family and friends. The way that he cared for his garden was emblematic of how he lived his life, with hard work, discipline, and organization rooted in a deep love and commitment for everything that he touched.
A lover of history, politics, and science, Victor made a daily practice of reading the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, and The News-Times, along with his monthly subscription of Discover magazine. He instilled in his children and grandchild the importance of education, believing that nothing was more valuable or worthy.
As much as Victor loved spending time in his garden, nothing meant more to him than the family he adored, and he never tired of letting them know how proud he was of them. Victor was predeceased by his beloved son, Victor Rui Barrier, his parents, his brother, Teófilo Barrier, and his sister, Laura DaSilva.
Victor is survived by his wife, Maria Alexandrina Barrier. His daughter, Julia Barrier Ferreira; and granddaughter, Alexia Barrier Ferreira, all of Danbury. Additionally, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Ilda Amaral of Danbury; brother-in-law, Joaquim Amaro of Portugal; nieces and nephews, Ana Howe of Naples, FL; Isilda and Alcides Fernandes of Danbury; Armando Amaral of New Milford; Gabriel and Alice Amaro of Portugal; Stephanie, Joseph, and Isabella Macci of Milford; Michelle, David, and Avery Proulx of East Longmeadow, MA; Laura and Jason Salvino of Bethel; and, Cristina DeSousa of Greenwich.
Victor will be incredibly missed, but remembered for his unwavering integrity and strength, and most of all, for the unconditional love that he showered generously upon his family and friends.
