William F. Weiss, 85 years old, passed away peacefully at his home on June 26th. Born to William and Mary C. (Arnone) Weiss, Bill called Danbury home all of his life.
Bill held a deep faith that guided him throughout his life, making him a devoted husband, family member and member of his community.
Graduated from Henry Abbott Technical School in 1950, Bill joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Korea during the war. Following an honorable discharge, Bill attended Danbury State College, seeking a teaching degree so that he could continue his life of service. With a B.S. and an M.S. from Danbury State College and a Sixth Year Certificate of Advanced Study from Southern Connecticut State College, he taught in the Danbury Public Schools for thirty-one years—at Hayestown, Broadview and Roger’s Park Junior High School.
Bill loved baseball. As a boy, he walked from Danbury’s north end to Roger’s Park to play ball. After lettering in both high school and college, he played for local industrial leagues. Once scouted by the New York Yankees, he had the chance to catch for Baseball Hall of Famer Charles “Red” Ruffing, as well as other well-known Yankees. He remained a die-hard Yankees fan but was glad to watch any team play.
Bill also loved a good card game—especially pinochle, cribbage, and setback. He had a warm smile for everyone, whether walking in the neighborhood or pitching horseshoes. He enjoyed his many opportunities to travel, especially to Norway and Bermuda, yet he was happiest with the family—joking around the dinner table or working in the yard with his grandson.
Bill was a member of St. Joseph Church, the Catholic War Veterans, Amerigo Vespucci Lodge and various educational organizations.
A soft-spoken, easygoing man, Bill was loved by all who knew him.
Bill is survived by his wife, Lois Heckler Weiss, stepchildren Susan I. O’Hara and John A. O’Hara, and by his grandson, Matthew J. O’Hara. He is also survived by his sister, Justine, and her husband Frederick Erickson, nephews William F., Frederick R. and Michael J. Erickson,
his brother-in-law, Victor Lundberg, and his sons Eirik and
Øystein.
Bill was pre-deceased by his parents and first wife, Thyra Lundberg.
The family will receive family and friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 1st, 2016 at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, Connecticut.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, July 2nd, 2016, at St. Joseph Church, 370 Main Street, Danbury, Connecticut at 10:00 a.m. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the family plot at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury, Connecticut.
