Suzanne M. (Avelar) Gonçalves, loving wife, mother, daughter and sister, passed away on October 19, 2019 at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton following a long illness. She was the wife of John Gonçalves with whom she shared 32 years of marriage.
Born in Flores, Azores, Portugal, daughter of Antonio and Maria J. (Dias) Avelar, she came to the United States in 1974 and settled in New Bedford.
In earlier years, she had worked at Cornell Dubilier Manufacturing in New Bedford.
Suzanne had a flair and talent for decorating which can be seen throughout her beautiful home. She loved flowers, gardening and shopping trips with her family.
Surviving in addition to her husband and parents is her son, Joshua Gonçalves; her sister, Marie Avelar-Fredette and her husband Raymond Fredette; her godchild and nephew, Ryan Avelar Fredette; her sisters-in-law, Cristina Gonçalves and Rosa Gonçalves; her husband’s nephew, Joel Santos; her husband’s niece, Susana Gonçalves; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was the granddaughter of the late Deolinda and Jose Dias and Jose and Maria J. Avelar.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Suzanne’s memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, National Headquarters, 6520 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309-2132.
