Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Julius and Louise (Santos) Pires she was a lifelong city resident. She was a member of the Hope Evangelical Church.
Mrs. Mattos was a homemaker. She enjoyed collecting historical coins and had a real love of her country. She enjoyed politics and tending to her garden. God and her family were the center of her life. She will always be lovingly remembered for her laugh, smile, always happy and never one to complain. Bertha is already greatly missed but she will never be forgotten.
In addition to her husband of almost 72 years, she is survived by six children, Donna Garcia and her husband Steve, Daryl Mattos and his wife Shirley, Doreen Buckley and husband David , Tracy Sousa, Roberta Chace and her husband Bruce, and Louise Taylor and husband Kevin; siblings, William Pires and his wife Stella, Donald Pires, and Arlene Barros and her husband Mel; 14 grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Aaron Mattos and Scott Chace and sister of the late Malcolm, Julius, Charles and Roger Pires.

Her funeral service will be Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ashley Boulevard, New Bedford.
