Donald I. Richmond, age 85, died March 28, 2016, at his home in Naples, Florida. He was the son of the late Albert I. Richmond and Nellie B. Richmond. Donald was born in New Bedford, Mass. where he lived for several years until moving with his parents to a dairy farm in North Dartmouth, leaving the farm to attend college at Norwich University. Upon graduation from Norwich with an Army commission he served during the Korean War. After leaving the Army he met and married Barbara Lawrence, moving to Andover, Mass.
After successful employment with several companies, he decided to invest in Real Estate development and income property which quickly became his fulltime occupation. Donald was still actively involved in his Real Estate businesses and other widespread financial investments. With his wife Barbara, Donald loved to travel all over this country with their Airstream trailer, as well as in many countries overseas. In 1985 they purchased a small place on the water with a dock at Outdoor Resorts of America Chokoloskee Island which they visited as much as possible for fishing and exploring the mangrove islands and beaches. Donald served on the Board of Directors and as Vice-President and President of the Board of Directors of Outdoor Resorts, a 283 unit condominium. Perhaps the biggest pleasure of his life was working to restore farmland in Dartmouth he and Barbara had purchased in 1977, on which they built a summer home and a large barn. Over the years they cleared woods overgrown with vines, removed many stones and created open fields which exposed beautiful stone walls.
Donald and his wife Barbara were very generous to many organizations and people. Norwich University especially has been the recipient of many gifts for renovations of various buildings and especially for scholarships to enable students to remain in college because of their parents financial difficulties. Donald and Barbara were married Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting in 1955 and have been faithful attendants and supporters of the Meeting. Recently, Donald has had the pleasure of playing the organ for Church services. He also enjoyed sailing and mountain climbing.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Barbara, to whom he has been married for 60 years, daughter Laurie Barthold, wife of Thomas Barthold and son Peter Richmond, husband of Gail Richmond, four grandchildren, Faye Morrone, Ross Barthold, Ashley Richmond and Alison Richmond, a brother Charles Richmond, and a deceased sister Evelyn Gordon.
His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 10:00AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT DARTMOUTH 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. Burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
