

John J. Mattos, 91 of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 in the Providence VA Medical Center. He was the loving husband of the late Bertha Louise (Pires) Mattos. Born in Wareham, a son of the late John B. and Louise (Vincent) Mattos, John was a lifelong resident of the South Coast. John served his country honorably, serving in the United States Navy. He did a tour in Vietnam, where he received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam) and the Vietnam Service Medal as well as traveling abroad with the Navy, serving more than 15 years, prior to being honorably discharged due to injuries sustained in Vietnam.
John was a devout husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was known as a very classy and well-dressed man, who loved his wife very much. He was kind, generous and extremely well mannered. John loved his companion, Snoopy. He also loved his Chrysler 300M, his pride and joy.
John is survived by his six children, Donna Garcia and her husband Steve, Daryl Mattos and his wife Shirley, Doreen Buckley and her husband David , Tracy Sousa, Roberta Chace and her husband Bruce, and Louise Taylor and her husband Kevin; siblings, Dennis Mattos and Joseph Mattos both of Wareham; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late Aaron Mattos and Scott Chace and predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
