Manuel N. Costa, age 88, of South Dartmouth passed away on March 24, 2019 at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was the husband of the late Maria (Sousa) Costa of South Dartmouth.

Born and raised on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, he was the eldest son of the late Manuel and Angelina Verisimo Costa. In 1964, he moved to the United States where he married his childhood friend and the love of his life, Maria Sousa. Manuel and Maria settled in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

Mr. Costa was a proud member of the United Auto Workers and was employed for many years as a machinist for Borg Warner Automotive. He was a kind, selfless and hardworking family man who enjoyed gardening, making his own wine, watching soccer and hockey games on TV, and spending time with his two granddaughters who he loved very much. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in New Bedford.

Mr. Costa is survived by a son, Michael Costa and his wife Anna of Walpole; two brothers, Gil Da Costa of Taunton and Jose Costa of Ontario, Canada; two sisters, Maria Sousa of Ontario, Canada and Gloria Claudio of Sao Miguel, Azores; and two granddaughters, Mia and Laura. Ti Manuel was like a second father to his brothers and sisters. He had the wisdom, foresight, and courage to seek out a better life for his family. A man that is a silent hero to many of his extended family who would not be here without him. His passing will be a loss to all that knew him.
