Richard John Simmons

Richard J. “VO” Simmons, MSG, USAF, Ret., age 90 of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at Hathaway Manor with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Janice G. (Ahearn) Simmons.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Peter and Mary (Machado) Simmons, he was a lifelong city resident. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1947. Rick was a proud 40 year veteran of the United States Coast Guard, the United States Navy and United States Air Force serving in the Korean Conflict as well as other campaigns, retiring in 1989 as a Master Sergeant. Later in life, prior to retirement he was employed as a security officer at the VF Outlets.

“Vo” as he was fondly known as, enjoyed spending time with his family especially his great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. He enjoyed building and repairing things around the family home, he was involved in the Toy’s for Boys and Girls at Otis Air Force Base, he was a lifelong member of the Victory Baptist Church, a member of the DAV, Chapter 7 of New Bedford, and the COA of Acushnet. Rick also served as a Special Police Officer for the City New Bedford.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan Leandre and Shelly Rosa and her husband David, all of New Bedford; three grandchildren, Scott Simmons of TN, Frank Simmons and his wife Michelle of Acushnet and Alyssa Tuininga and her husband Cole of NH; six great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also a brother Roland Simmons of Scottsdale AZ. He was predeceased by his sister Majorie Romanski of New Bedford.

Rick’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 10:00AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., S. Dartmouth, MA 02748. Relatives and friends are invited. Worked with Rick on Otis Air Force Base in the 70s with the 102nd Security Police. He was a very good man. Rest In Peace Rick.
