Roy L. Kuphal M.D., age 50, of Dartmouth, died unexpectedly Monday, November 17, 2014 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Paula Walsh Kuphal, with whom he shared twenty-five years of marriage.
Born in Norwood, raised in Norfolk, he was the son of Roy L., Sr. and Jacqueline (Kerr) Kuphal of Franklin.
Dr. Kuphal graduated from King Philip Regional High School in 1982. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1986, and his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1990. He completed his medical residency at Temple University Hospital and his nephrology fellowship at Boston University Hospital. He was board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology with the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Kuphal was a respected and gifted physician with Hawthorn Medical Associates practicing in the southcoast community for over nineteen years.
Roy loved the ocean. He enjoyed sailing, power boating, and fishing and was a member of the New Bedford Yacht Club. He was an avid Bruins fan, with a love for all sports; especially those in which his children were involved. He was fond of nature and had reverence for all living things.
In addition to his wife and parents, Roy is survived by: his four children, Ryan, Anne, William and Jane Kuphal all of Dartmouth; two sisters, Belinda McCusker and her husband Dennis of North Carolina and Pamela Kuphal of Franklin; mother and father-in-law, William and Pauline (Souza) Walsh of Wrentham; sister-in-law, Kathleen Walsh and her husband Daniel Serpico of Holliston; brothers-in-law, William Walsh and his wife Barbara of Natick and Stephen Walsh and his wife Eunice Urio of Nairobi, Kenya; and his beloved dog, Copper.
He is also survived by sixteen nieces and nephews, and many good friends and colleagues.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral Mass Friday, November 21, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Family members and close friends will attend a private burial immediately following the Mass.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM in the WARING-SULLIVAN Home of Memorial Tribute, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth.
