Thomas M. Brooks Jr.

November 24, 1927November 9, 2021

Thomas M. Brooks, Jr., 93, died on November 9, 2021 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Eleanor L. (Gertridge) Brooks with whom he would have celebrated their 72nd anniversary in two weeks. Tom was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1927 in Providence, R.I. the son of Thomas M. Brooks and Dorothy (Chicoine) Brooks. He grew up in Dartmouth and was a 1946 graduate of Dartmouth High. He served two years in the United States Marine Corps. Tom was a member of Noquochoke Masonic Lodge and a member and Past Master of Abraham H. Howland, Jr. Masonic Lodge.

Although his principle employment was as an Assessor for the Town of Dartmouth and later the Town of Stoughton, he served his town in many other capacities. Tom was one of the original members of the Dartmouth Board of a Public Works. He was a 34 year member of Dartmouth Fire District One and was the Chief of the Department for 12 years. He also was a member of the Dartmouth Board of Registrars for a number of years. After retirement he worked as an EMT, for several different companies. It kept him busy, made him lifelong friends and he proudly continued until he was 82 years old. He spent many hours coaching Little League teams when his sons were young, and in later years never missed one of his grandson’s hockey games. His family was his greatest treasure. He smiled brightest when in the presence of his great-grandchildren, or driving his little red sports car.

Tom is survived by his wife, his son Scott T. Brooks and his wife, Jane, his grandchildren Stephanie (Brooks) Miller and her husband Todd and Scott T. Brooks II and his wife Rachel, his beloved great grandchildren Ella Grace White, Thomas James Brooks, and Amelia Grace Miller, his step-granddaughter Catrina Forsythe and her children Jayla and Ta-Rey, his sister-in-law Audrey (Duce) Brooks, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Kevin Harry Brooks, his brother John Chicoine Brooks and his sister and brother in law, Louise (Brooks) Gertridge and Harry D. Gertridge.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Thomas Brooks, a Dartmouth icon. As a child, and owing to the fact my dad, Charles A. Ditata, was a fellow US Marine veteran/friend of Tom, I had the opportunity to ride "shotgun" as he made sand and gravel deliveries in his truck for the Chicoine Sand Pit Company. This occurred during the summer before entering first grade. Mr. Brooks was a kind man, wonderful to me as a pre-schooler and throughout my life-whenever I encountered him around town- he was ready with a smile and a quip. He was someone that young people could always admire and emulate.

I was just looking at a picture posted in Standard Times 15 years ago, when I was a new Mason, with George Breault, Tom Brooks, George Panagakos, and Myself. With a turkey that had been prepared and cooked for feeding the needy. I was thinking as I looked at the picture that only George Breault had passed away and thinking that 3 of us still remained. I just saw in the Dartmouth Week that Chief Tom had just passed away and he will surely be missed at any Masonic events. God Bless and God be with the family during this difficult time around the holidays . Richie Poulin

Eleanor and Family, I sadly did not have the pleasure of meeting Tom, being new to the neighborhood and COVID restrictions also cutting short social opportunities. But I have come to know Eleanor, and through you, and all that I have heard and read about Tom, know what a wonderful man he was. I am so very sorry for your loss, but his qualities and personality will undoubtedly be felt through the generations of your family. I can tell that all who knew Tom were fortunate in his friendship, and blessed within his family.

As we approach the day of your birth, which you so often reminded us of on many occasions, we will think kindly of Tom. Many fond memories and plenty of shenanigans, will forever be in my thoughts. Thank you to Ellie and her famous grilled cheese for lunch visits. Tom always spoke of how much he loved his family and especially his "Ellie"
So deeply saddened by your loss,

Sorry for your family's loss. Tom was a great friend we spoke a lot of our past jobs, Tom with fire and me in police work. Tom gave me a thin blue line plate that i have on my truck. It means a lot to me as he gave it to me.
