We are devastated to announce that Andrew passed away after a very brief battle with with renal cancer. Heather, his wife of 27 years was at his side, holding his hand and telling him how very loved he was.
Andrew was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Jean Gillie, and brother Joseph. He is survived, and desperately missed, by his wife, Heather (Ellis), siblings Mary (Marcel), Betty (Carl), Debbie, Sue, Paul (Pam), and Brenda (Ross), as well as his Aunt Theresa, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Family pups Paisley and Dibley are sad and are now left with their backup human, Heather, who promises to keep giving them an unreasonable and undeserved amount of treats like he did, and to tell them they’re good dogs when they are not.
He was the baby the family, and with 6 older siblings, he was very loved and cared for.
Andrew’s love of baking started at Mary’s Bread Basket where he learned how to bake breads, muffins, cookies, scones, cinnamon buns, and cakes from scratch. It was also at Mary’s Bread Basket that he met Heather. He then spent 20 plus years at Sobeys as a baker, and enjoyed the quiet, busy work of the back shift. His homemade baked goods like his various cookies, chocolate zucchini bread, cornmeal muffins and bread will be greatly missed at pot lucks and family gatherings.
He enjoyed gardening in the backyard and harvesting whatever grew. One year, Andrew planted 6 zucchini plants, which we discovered was 5 plants too many. The sheer overwhelming amount of zucchini led to the chocolate zucchini bread recipe being used a lot. He loved the Labour Day Horseshoe Tournaments, and then the Washer Toss Tournaments at Brenda’s and always made baked goods for it.
Cremation has taken place, with internment in the Heritage Oaks columbarium at Christ Church, Dartmouth.
A special thank you to Andrew's managers at Sobeys, Sabrina, Joy, and Barbie, as well as Drs Weakly, Quinn, and Shakla and all of the nurses on the 5W wing of the Dartmouth General, as well as his family physician, Dr Babatolu. Thank you for looking out for Andrew and taking such good care of him.
Andrew wanted no service, no memorial. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Feed Nova Scotia, or Bide Awhile Animal Shelter instead. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date to be determined.
His last words before he fell asleep and passed away were words of love.
The last words he heard were words of love. We should all be so blessed. Sleep well, my Huckaboo. Be safe, I love you.
