The family of Anna Dobrowolski of Lower Sackville, NS, welcome friends and family to join us in remembering our mother, grandmother, neighbour and friend. Anna passed away on November 1, 2019 at the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Halifax with many members of her family by her side, and the rest present in heart.
Anna inspired all who knew her through her reverence for life, immense practical wisdom, unwavering integrity and strength, and tenacity for making hard decisions at the right times. Born in the Ukraine on July 26, 1925, Anna demonstrated unyielding resilience during her early years before courageously seeking peace in our beloved country. On July 19, 1951, 26 year-old immigrant Anna Kostrycja was welcomed into Canada where she arrived aboard the MS Nelly landing at Pier 21 in Halifax. During her ocean journey, she met Ted Dobrowolski who became her husband for 42 years and father to their six children. Anna was the matriarch of a loyal and loving family that now spans across North America.
Anna loved beautiful Cape Breton Island where she lived for 45 years and raised her children. She also held Austria and its people close to her heart after spending time there before her voyage to Canada. She loved to pick blueberries, spend time with friends, family and especially her grandchildren, and nourished all of us with delicious food and unconditional love.
Left to honour her legacy are her daughter Rose (Don) Wells, son Joseph (Joyce) Dobrowolski, son John (Angela) Dobrowolski, daughter Linda (Jay) McDonald, son Jim (Barbara Cunningham) Dobrowolski and son Francis (Lois) Dobrowolski. She is adored by her grandchildren Noelle (Bobby) MacLean, Kenny (Kayla) MacQueen, Chrisanna (Toby) Banks, Sarah Dobrowolski, Jennie (Brian Conoley), Megan Levy, SK McDonald, Brandan McDonald, T.J. Dobrowolski, Francis Dobrowolski, Jennifer (Zachery Feltham) Dobrowolski and her precious great grandchildren Annah-Clare MacLean, Jasper MacQueen and Linnea Feltham.
Anna, Mom, Nanny was pre-deceased by most of her family from the Ukraine including her father Gregor, mother Kristina, brothers Peter, Michael, Stephen, and Walter and sisters Saundra, Tatiana, and Maria. She is also pre-deceased by the father of her children, Ted Dobrowolski.
Celebration of Anna’s full and beautiful life will take place starting Sunday, November 3 from 6:00 P.M – 8:00 P.M. at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home in Dartmouth, followed by a service on Monday, November 4 at 11:00 A.M. at the same venue.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever… Psalms 23 - 6
