I just recorded the Lord's of the Ocean again so I can keep them, and while watching the 50th Anniversary Party episode, I decided to Google Barry....like I had a feeling. My hubby and I visited Barry last trip to my home, Dartmouth, at the Long term care facility.  He was always a good friend.  When my Dad passed and wanted his ashes scattered at Black Rock in March of 1994, Barry made it happen.  We met I high school.  He was a tough guy and I was very sheltered so was a little fearful of him them but as Yeats went by, he showed me much kindness and I forever had a soft spot in my heart for him.  I am saddened by his passing.  I met Matt actually when I stopped in at Doninion diving to ask where I could find him on that trip  home 4ish years ago. I will miss Barry and I will keep a special part of my heart for his memory.  Diane MacInnes Beard

Barry certainly was one of a kind, and I mean that in the best possible way. I met him many many years ago through my husband,  who always considered him a good friend and mentor.  He was super nice to our family.  When our girls were young, Barry would take our family on boating adventures at the Lillyfront.  You never knew where you would end up but it was always unique and fun.  My girls will never forget those outings.  We loved him,  he was Uncle Barry!  He will be missed.  There will never be another "Barry".

arry of course was such an open hearted person with  a great sense of humour He came to our wedding  in scotland and I think more people remember him better than the actual ceremony
Some years ago I happened to be Halifax  near Xmas and attended Dominion party.I got chatting to the taxi driver to the event and when  he discovered I was a friend of Baryy turned off the meter explaining that Barry helped him like he did so many  others.I have a hundred stories but for now I just want remember our
 friend

Barry sure is missed. Whenever I was leaving work he was usually the last one telling me goodnight but only after a good story and a few laughs. All the while his eyes were twinkling and you knew he wanted you to stay for more conversation. Rest in peace Barry and thank you for the entertainment!

There are no words to express our sorrow, Barry was a joy to have known.  He made life an adventure and has left us with, not only memories, but a wonderful family for which was his greatest legacy.  Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.  With love, Deb and Art.

The Final Five Bells 
         Old time divers , and some new ones communicate underwater with their team mates or topside by sending Pulls and Bells on their air hose or umbilicals or signal line . A Pull is a long steady pull , and a bell is a short quick jab like ringing a ships bell , and like ringing a ships bell it is rung in pairs , 
       When a diver is on the ocean floor or in a ship wreck .. he signals his team mates topside that he has completed his work and is teady to come up by sending Five Bells … The topside crew ready the upper deck  to bring the diver safely to the surface ,,, then they send him Four Pulls to start his ascent from the darkness of the ocean floor upwards to the light at the surface …
           I like to think that at the right time , with family all around, he held the hand of a loved one and sent Five Bells to our Creator , the Grand Architect of the Universe , to signal that he had completed his work down here , and was ready to come up  
         I know in my heart , our creator signalled back to Barry , four Pulls to start his ascent … Upwards …. Towards the Light… 
     Rest In Peace, Mate , with Fair Winds and a Following Sea with Jim  at your side again  heading out to sea 

Barry was larger than life , gregarious, exuberant, always skating on the edge of life  , willing to take a chance in business as in life. We were gentleman rivals in the commercial diving racket ,friends and working colleagues for three decade or more ,p, starting over a half century ago . There were times that we would bid on the same contract , and regardless of you won it , go a couple of beers and fried clams afterwards  one time we bid on raising a trawler at the Shelburne wharf .. DD ‘s bid was higher than ours but they were chosen by DOE as they were better known .. a few days later , Barry calls and wants us to do the job at our bidded  price . We worked well together .  We flew out to the Jack up off Sable when they needed their Chamber and life support system up graded  and in return invited us ( Archie, Butch ( Rip )and I ) to New Orleans during Mardi Gras for the American Diving Contractors symposium and exhibition .a good time had by all. Made good contacts .. Barry’s motto … nay .. his battle cry should have been ‘ Carpe Diem ‘ my interpretation of this Latin phrase in its completeness is “Seize the Day - For We Do Not Know What Tomorrow May Bring “ it suits him so well … I can imagine him and Jim in the wheelhouse steaming towards Sable Island for the first time and saying Damn the Torpedoes ( actually the Damn the Tides around Sable ) FuLL SPEED AHEAD !  This is very wordy , and I apologize, but I have so many great memories of your husband father and grandfather .  I have just one more thought to convey .. but I will do it in another posting block called The Final Five Bells .. .. . 

Our deepest condolences go out to the family. Barry will be deeply missed. We spoke everyday and he always had a story to tell, he knew so much about so many things. There are no words to describe the loss we feel at this time. Sincerest sympathy to all who knew him. There’ll never be another one like him ❤️

   May Barry sleep in the sweetest of peace, on the wings of his angels.

Barry was my father's roommate (John) when they were residents at the Arborstone. He enjoyed practical jokes and tall tales as much as Dad did and shared many stories over fast food deliveries. This helped ease some of the pain and transition for Dad. Barry won't be forgotten.

Condolences to the family.

I was a friend of Barey and Jim since their days in Musq Har they took me for my first dive in Jeddore. They even let me keep my boat at their dock one winter. Barey was a true friend who could always be counted on. I will miss him. Ron Bayer.
