It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Barry Russell Lohnes, at the age of 76, on March 1, 2022. Born in Halifax on September 5, 1945, to the late Russell (d. 1964) and Phyllis (d. 2015) (Clifford d. 1994) Cox.
He treasured his time growing up with his many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Always on the go and being adventurous, it was at this impressionable time in his life that he moved to Musquodoboit Harbour and forged a lifelong friendship with Jim.
Barry began to build his life at a young age, never one to keep it simple, he was working at the Volvo plant in Halifax by day and playing drums in various bands throughout Halifax and Dartmouth at night. Once he started his family, he realized the importance of his success. He started working with Oceaneering (CanDive) in Newfoundland and this only fed his love of the water, and his sense of adventure.
Upon returning to Nova Scotia, and being a very innovative businessman, he further established DOMINION DIVING as Canada’s largest Diving & ROV company. A staple in Halifax Harbour and many harbours around Atlantic Canada. He also enjoyed time away at his motel, The Lilyfront Motel & Cottages, in Lunenburg, NS.
We have lost a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather uncle, cousin and friend. He was the proud Papa to 10 beautiful granddaughters, 2 handsome great-grandsons and a precious great-granddaughter. He is survived by Patricia Lohnes and his children, Carla (Stephen) Davies and their children, LaRae (Brad) and their son Jeffery, Chelsae & Kaylee; Carolynn (Herb) Lintaman and their children Ashley, her son Jacob & Brittany (Teala); Robin (Shannon) Lohnes and their children, Brittani, her daughter Vanessa, Frencesca (Lucas) & Sophia; and Matthew Lohnes (Nina Blackmore) and their children Lillyana, Seaenna & Addison
He enjoyed making people smile and always made time for you if you needed his support. Dad was quick with a compliment, or words of wisdom at difficult times. Us children were so fortunate to have had him as our father, as we continue to live by Life’s Little Instructions, he has established in us all.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday March 27, 2022, 1pm - 4 pm, at The Doubletree by Hilton 101 Wyse Road, Dartmouth, NS.
Donations in Barry’s memory may be made to the Missions to Seafarers Halifax or Camphill Veterans Memorial Hospital, through the QEII Foundation.
