Basil Henry Gordon

Born on March 7, 1929 in Halifax, he was the son of the late Basil Morris Gordon and Mary (Mamie) Watts Gordon.

Bas was known for his common sense, his love of social gatherings and his many friends. He was a man of action and at an early age, he worked and danced at Ashburn Golf Club and the Shore Club in Hubbards. He worked for many years as a power engineer at NS Power and Imperial Oil, until he left to sell cars and heavy equipment. He established several businesses including Auto Sound, Future Systems Sales and the Sunnyside Candy Bowl. He was the former Secretary and General Manager of the Halifax Dartmouth Bridge Commission. After he retired, he was manager for several years at Scotia Speed World. He was a long time member of the Dartmouth Curling Club, Brightwood Golf and the Owls Club. He was a member of Rotary and the Dartmouth Sundowners. He enjoyed going to the Quebec International Curling Championship for 48 years and loved travelling, especially trips to St-Antoine, to Florida and to the Restigouche River to salmon fish. He was excellent at cards and crib, and could score your hand as well as his own in seconds. While he was a lifelong Conservative, he had friends of every political stripe, and enjoyed debates with his morning coffee club.

Bas was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine (Gaudet) in 1989, and his beloved daughter, Dara Lynn Gordon in 2009.

Bas is survived by his loving partner Denyse Bergeron of Quebec City, by his son Richard (Barb Jones), his son in law Gerald McConnell, and his cherished grandchildren Devon (Darcy Bishop) and Ashley (Steve Kley) McConnell-Gordon, Sarah Gordon and Marc (Isabelle Jubenville) Gordon. He was very proud of his great grandchildren Isla, Harris Hawk, and Loulou Bishop, and Ella and James Kley. He is survived by his sisters, Gwen Maclachlin and Joan Matthews. He was predeceased by his brother Tom Gordon and his sisters Elizabeth Murphy, Anna Jean Holland and Ella Ballantyne.

Bas was active and alert until the very end, and very much at peace. The family wants to thank the Shannex Team at Kinross, and the staff of the Dartmouth General for their care and support. A celebration of his life will be held later in 2020, when people can gather again. Donations can be made in his memory to Cystic Fibrosis Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
