It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty Sweet of Dartmouth. Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at Dartmouth General Hospital on September 29, 2020. Born in Port Dufferin on July 13, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Anna Smiley. She was predeceased by her husband, Val. He was the love of her life and taken far too soon; may they be together now and for the rest of eternity. At a young age, she moved to Halifax to live with her aunt Mabel. In 1960, she graduated from the Victoria General Hospital as a registered nurse, obtained her Bachelor of Nursing from Dalhousie University in 1986 and then retired after many years of being a nursing supervisor. In retirement, Betty enjoyed being active in many social circles, including the Red Hat Society, IODE, Christian Women, and frequent lunch outings with her VG nursing friends. She loved to travel with friends and family, and her independence produced many solo adventures to Florida in the winter. She passionately followed her grandchildren’s sporting events and would often be seen at the rink in Cole Harbour Place. She will be fondly remembered for the many lives she touched with her kind heart and selflessness. She is predeceased by Barbara (Paul), and leaves behind her sons, Rufus (Patricia), Greg (Michele); siblings, Phyllis (Wendell), Murray (Carolyn); grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa), Jonathan (Simone), Ryan, Rebecca (David), Jamie (Emily) and six great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation on Monday, October 5th from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held by invitation only with Rev. Mary Lynne Whyte officiating. In memoriam, donations may be made to the Woodlawn United Church.

I remember Mrs Sweet with a smile and fond memories of my years as a student and new RN. She was so very kind and supportive of us as we blundered our way into nursing in the halls of the old VGH.

May the sharing of these memories be of some comfort to you.

Betty had many endearing qualities. She was soft spoken, attentive when you spoke to her and very good at some difficult puzzles that she was determined to complete. She was kind and positive about her life and a true matriarch. She always spoke about the love she had for her family and how each one of them truly cared about one another. I will miss you, Betty. Thank you for showing me kindness and how every day is a gift.
Please accept my sincere condolences Rufus, Greg and extended Family members. Your Mum was the Best xo

Mary and I extend condolences to Rufus, Greg, Phyllis, Murray and all members of Betty's family; she will be remembered for her devotion to family and contribution to the nursing profession and community. My early memories of Betty go back to Port Dufferin and the Smiley family connection through our parents.

Rufus, Greg and families:
Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your mother and grandmother. We used to chat at the rink when Brad played hockey with either Jonathan or Jamie. She was a lovely lady and we always admired her independence and how she seemed to enjoy life. May all of your treasured memories of happy times with your Mom soon replace the sadness you are feeling now.
