Of Eastern Passage, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Dartmouth General Hospital. He was 92 years old. Clyde was born on June 24, 1924 in Eastern Passage to Maurice James and Rose (Kelly) Henneberry. The family were original settlers from the historic village on Devil’s Island and he was proud of this heritage. He spent his youth working with his father on a gravel barge, crushing rock to build the foundations of buildings on the Halifax waterfront. He spent years as a fisherman before opening a popular lobster pound on the Main Road in Eastern Passage. When he retired from the lobster business, he enjoyed a second career as a self-taught oil painter. His paintings of local scenes and characters have been widely reproduced in prints and postcards. The Interpretive Center at Fisherman’s Cove in Eastern Passage was named the “Clyde T Henneberry Room” in his honour. He later released a popular CD of poems and recitations, and enjoyed this celebrity. Clyde was the subject of a CBC television documentary and numerous newspaper and magazine articles. Many of his stories of local interest were included in “The View From Here” by author Joe Brown. In his later years, Clyde loved to walk the boardwalk in the Passage, travelling back and forth in his distinctive blue scooter. He could be found any day of the week with friends Joe and Bianca at “Coffee Tea & Sea” or having lunch at the Boondocks restaurant. Clyde is survived by his daughter, Ruth Henneberry, son-in-law William Blakeney and brother Raymond Henneberry. He was predeceased by his parents, Maurice James and Rose Henneberry, his beloved wife Margorie (Swindell), sisters Una Gill, Eva MacDonald, Pearl Campbell, Hazel Pepper, Ruth Langan, Mae Knox and brothers Everett, Stanley and Bill Henneberry. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital for their kindness and support over the years. A memorial service will be held in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 22. Friends may call from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., Sunday in the funeral home.
