David Colin Murphy
January 11, 1944 – July 1, 2021
Age 77, David Colin Murphy, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 1st , 2021 at his summer home, surrounded by his loving family. “If you are reading this today, you will know that Saint Michael the Patron Saint of Police has recruited me for a new position beyond this life. I was born January 11, 1944, the first of four children to Helen (Collins) and Fred Murphy. I grew up in the west end of Halifax in a neighbourhood full of children and enjoyed playing street hockey and baseball. I was also a member of Cubs, Boy Scouts & Army Cadets, PLF. In 1953, I became a lifetime member of the South Park St. YMCA. When I was 18, I took up handball, which I enjoyed until 5 years ago. I was one of the founding members of HANS (Handball Association of Nova Scotia). After high school, I became a general Insurance underwriter for 5 years. In 1968, I joined the Halifax Police Dept. and immensely enjoyed a rewarding and successful 36 year career retiring with the rank of Inspector on April 1, 2004. I had the honour of swearing in my son, Justin to the ranks of HRP just before retirement in January 2004. After retirement, I worked as a land title searcher and a Commissioner of Oaths for the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, as a document mortgage signer. I retired again in November 2019. On a personal note, I met the love of my life, Anne Crook in 1990 at a cottage in Caribou River, where we now own our summer home. We married in 1992. Anne’s three children, Tristan, Amanda and Rob quickly became friends with my son, Justin and we all became a devoted and loving family. Every year since 1992 we have vacationed in St. Pete Beach with our children and made countless memories. To this day, our four adult children continue the tradition and join us there with their families and our countless friends we’ve made over the years. I am survived by my wife, Anne; our four children, Tristan, Amanda (Andrew Sullivan), Justin (Rachel Plowman), Rob (Andrea Chalker); my two grandchildren, Sadie and Logan (Sullivan); and my siblings, Glenn (Faye Wyatt), Faye (John Morley), Dale (Roger Mott) and many nephews and nieces.” Due to COVID-19, Celebration of Life will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.See more See Less
