

DUNCAN, Donald Augustus - Age 85, of New Minas, passed away March 7, 2016, in Valley Regional Hospital in the presence of sons Brad and Jeff, and niece Peggy. Born on July 17, 1930, he was the son of the late William L. and Flora Jane (French) Duncan. Don was a corporal in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 11 years, honourably released in 1962. He went on to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans achieving Inspector status in 1974 until his retirement in 1986 - a combined federal service of 35 years. Dad enjoyed the outdoors. After retirement, Elaine and he relocated to a quiet lake in northern Ontario before returning to settle in New Minas in the early 90s. He loved to hunt, fish and paddle his canoe often in the accompaniment of his sons and dog, Brigus. Enjoyed many hunting seasons at the "camp." Dad was a kind, giving man, recognized for his sound advice - "a rock." He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Elaine, Haliburton Place, Windsor; sons, William (Anne) of Dartmouth; Bradford (Diane) of Dartmouth; Jeffrey (Brenda) of Grand Lake; stepdaughters, Barbara and Shelley, both in Alberta; many nieces and nephews; and grandchildren, Christopher and Sarah. Don was predeceased by brothers, Vern, Jack, Bob, Reg, Carl, Bruce; and sisters, Audrey and Mary in infancy. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 11 from 7-9 p.m. in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. A celebration of life with be held on Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m. in Christ Church, Wentworth Street, Dartmouth, Rev. Bruce Murray officiating. Cremation and interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia in support of Dad's wife, Elaine. Special thanks to Elaine's caregiver, Donna Minnis for her ongoing support for Dad and during his final hours.
