Elizabeth "Betty" Ingram

Of Dartmouth passed away peacefully on November 4, 2021. She was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia and grew up there until 1947 when she moved to Regina, Saskatchewan to marry the love of her life, Allan Ingram, whom she met while he served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the war years. She stayed in Saskatchewan for 20 years working and raising a family. She happily returned to her beloved Maritimes in 1965 and settled with her family in Dartmouth.

Her work life spanned many years including employment at Molson Breweries and GTE Automatic Electric Company in Dartmouth. For many years, Mom was the school secretary at Dartmouth High where she was loved and appreciated by the students and staff.

She was very proud of her Scottish heritage, loved the bagpipes and regularly attended the Nova Scotia International Tattoo just to hear the pipe bands play Scotland the Brave. Music was in her blood. She loved all kinds of music and spent many years learning to play the Hammond organ, travelling to Florida at one time to attend an organ conference. She was a devoted listener of Seaside FM and had many friends among the radio personalities at the station, particularly as a “co-host” to Martyn Usher. Thank you, Seaside FM for the many hours of joy that you gave her.

She played bridge avidly, expertly and with great glee. She loved to read books and travel, never tiring of talking about the most recent book she was reading or telling the stories of adventures in her favourite travel destinations including Ireland, England, Russia and the Scandinavian countries. She was a great cook and gracious hostess and entertained often. She also loved the Toronto Blue Jays, doing the daily crossword puzzle, a good joke and a glass of wine.

Mom was an independent, strong, and determined person. She learned to drive when cars had standard transmissions. She was a homemaker while working outside of the home and followed her own path in everything she did. She volunteered with the DGH Hospital for several years and fondly spoke of her friends and the time she spent there.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Allan Ingram, father, Russell McLeod, her mother Claire (Freeman) McLeod, and her sister Elaine (McLeod) Giffin. She is survived by her sons, Steven, (Ruth); David, (Tricia); daughter Janice (Doug) Menzies; Niece Tessa (Mike) Adams; grandchildren, Matthew and Stephen Menzies; Scott (Jen); Erin (Nathan) Parsons; step-grandchildren Jennifer (Chris) Keough; Michelle (Ryan MacNeil) Nixon; Kristen (Doug) Couch; Ryan (Robyn) Wilkin; and 10 great grandchildren.

Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Parkland at the Lakes, Dr. Akin-Deko, Cole Harbour Family Medicine and the Dartmouth General Hospital for their compassionate care for Mom.

A private family interment is planned for the future. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
