FOSTON, Ernest Garfield “Gary” It is with heavy hearts we the family of Ernest Garfield (Gary) Foston announce the sudden passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend on Wednesday, March 4, 2020. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 27, 1953, Gary was the son of Elizabeth (Betty MacKenzie) and the late Ernest Foston. Gary is survived by his loving mother Betty Foston, brother Bruce (Vanessa Carter) Foston, nephew Matthew (Sarah Pyke) Foston, niece Jillian (Garth) Martin, great-nephews Leeland and Archer Martin, mother of Matthew and Jillian, Christine (Bob Kelly) Penney, aunt Madelyn (John) Ross, cousins Debbie Ross, Heather Ross, Bob (Lynn) MacKenzie and Tom (Sandy) MacKenzie. He will also be greatly missed by many of his dear friends. Gary is pre-deceased by grandparents Reginald and Mildred MacKenzie, Anastasia and James De Young, uncle Ronald and aunt Maureen MacKenzie. A talented plumber with incredible work ethic, Gary graduated from Dartmouth High School and then from NSCC where he received his Journeyman Plumbing and a dual certificate in Steamfitting/G7 Gasfitting. Gary was a member of The Plumbers Union-56 and worked on significant jobs such as Imperial Oil, oil rigs, Black & MacDonald, Tin Mines, Yarmouth hospital as well as many new and old residential properties, to name a few. Gary worked in these trades for over 42 years until he retired in 2015 to become his Mom’s primary caregiver, helping Betty cope with every need following her accident. Gary thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing and anything to do with the outdoors and wilderness. Gary also very much appreciated and valued time spent with his family, especially with his niece and nephew as well as his great-nephews. Both the visitation 7-9pm, Friday, March 13th and service in celebration of Gary’s life 1pm, Saturday, March 14th with Rev. Edwin Ebsary officiating, will be held in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. There will be a reception following the service.
