Eva Mae MacDonald (nee Singer) passed away peacefully at Dartmouth General Hospital on August 7, 2022. Eve was born April 14, 1931 to Delina Mae Singer of Kennetcook, Hants Country, and was a cherished granddaughter of Edmund and Lillias Singer, also of Kennetcook.
Eve attended Windsor High School, travelling by train from Kennetcook every day. She later attended Normal College in Truro to attain her teacher’s licence, and taught in both a one-room schoolhouse in the Annapolis Valley and at Park School in Dartmouth. After starting her family, Eve ran a nursery school from her home that gave many neighbourhood children a head start in their education.
Eve was married to Joseph Graydon MacDonald in June, 1954. She was a loving and loved mother of Joan Elaine Zatzman (Michael) of Dartmouth, and Anne Krista MacDonald of Ottawa, and a beloved grandmother of Jessica Lynn Lemoine (Steve) of Cole Harbour, Joseph John Hickes of Bracebridge, Ontario, and Graydon Augustine MacDonald Dombowsky of Ottawa (Janine Leynes). Recently, Eve became an adoring “Gigi” and namesake to precious great-granddaughter, Eva Christine Lemoine.
Eve was predeceased by her mother and husband, half-siblings Mina Barron (Rob) and Ken Anthony (Linda), as well as son-in-law Doug Lloyd of Ottawa, and Harvey Lively (Helen) of Middle Sackville. Eve is survived by half-siblings Karen Lynch (Layton) and Barry Anthony (Robin), Jess and Joe’s dad John Hickes (Chrissy) and Graydon’s dad Perry Dombowsky.
Eve and “Grady” loved square dancing until Grady’s health failed. They cherished their time together on their property in Tatamagouche. Eve cared for her husband until his death in 1986.
Eve will be missed by her many friends and Settle Street neighbours with whom she shared the fruits of her labours from her vegetable garden, and many special memories.
During her 4 years at Parkland at the Lakes, she enjoyed the companionship of Gordon Joycey, and was most appreciative of the kindness of his extended family.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of 4 West at the Dartmouth General Hospital for their compassionate care of Eve and family during her almost 4 weeks of hospitalization. We are especially grateful for the care provided by LPN Tina, (that last cup of tea with Mom, and so much more), and Dr. Mercer, for his kindness in Mom’s final hours.
A Celebration of Life will be held at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St, Dartmouth on Tuesday, August 16 at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Mary Lynne Whyte of Woodlawn United Church presiding. A reception will follow the service. Interment at St Croix Cemetery will be a private family event.
Although Eve loved flowers, she requested that people consider making a donation in her memory to Seaside Radio, or the SPCA, in lieu of flowers.
