McCarthy, Florence Patricia (Pat) died at home in Dartmouth Friday, January 16, 2015. Born in Toronto May 5, 1925, she was the daughter of Dr. George O. and Viola (Mann) Hutchinson of LeMarchant St. Halifax. She attended LeMarchant School, the Halifax Academy and took numerous classes at Dalhousie University. She worked as a secretary to officers at MD 6, Halifax from 1943 until 1946 and later finished her career as secretary to the Director of the Children’s Aid Society in Halifax. She married her high school sweetheart Gerald McCarthy in July, 1949. They had two children - a daughter Nancy and a son Michael, both of Dartmouth. Gerald and Pat moved to Dartmouth in 1955 and remained there since. After Gerald’s retirement in 1992, they spent many winters in Clearwater, Florida where they enjoyed themselves hugely and made a number of dearly remembered friends. Pat’s life was entirely devoted to her family. She was a wonderful wife and mother. Pat was a gifted painter and lover of art and music. At various times she was active in the IODE; the United Church Women at St. Andrew’s Church in Halifax and Woodlawn United in Dartmouth; Dartmouth Choral Society; and the Women Of Rotary, Dartmouth, but her principle interest and her only real interest after she ceased working in 1952 was her home and family. Pat is survived by her husband Gerald, her daughter Nancy, her son Michael, brother Murray (Marina) of Halifax, sister Marilyn (David - deceased) King, of Tantallon, sisters-in-law Vera (Charles - deceased) Stone of Halifax and Maxine Hutchinson of Alberta, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Edwin and Gerald (Joyce), sisters Margaret of Halifax and Kathleen (Malcolm) Harlow of London, Ont., sisters-in-law Jessie (Russell) James of Dartmouth, Jean (Sanford) Scott of Dartmouth, and brother-in-law Raymond (Florence) McCarthy of Sackville, N.S. In accordance with her wishes, Pat has been cremated. Visitation will be on Tuesday Jan. 20 from 2-4 and 7-9pm in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, where a celebration of Pat’s wonderful life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21. Family flowers only.
